Sri Lanka in Transition: Peace, Justice and Reconciliation, with The Honorable Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sri Lanka Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which came into effect on February 23, 2002, has paved the way for a realistic hope for peace in Sri Lanka. The LTTE has been fighting for an independent Tamil homeland in the North and East of Sri Lanka since 1983. Peace efforts began in earnest this year, initiated by Ranil Wickremesinghe after his election as Prime Minister last December. The Government and the LTTE have both observed a cease-fire during the last six months, demonstrating their commitment to peace. The two sides are scheduled to meet in Thailand from 16-18 September for their first formal face-to-face talks in seven years in an effort to end two decades of conflict. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe will talk about the peace talks with the LTTE, the framework for reconciliation, and the post-conflict transitional process in Sri Lanka.
