AIDS in Iran:
Letter from Iran

October 10, 2003

Dear all,

We would like to thank those who came and supported our conference on Innovative Approaches to AIDS in Iran at Asia Society. Our goal is to expand our connections with other organizations in order to establish and upgrade our HIV, Drug Use and Sexually Transmitted Infection prevention and care programs in various developing countries. Furthermore, by upgrading and expanding our programs to other developing countries.

HIV/AIDS is a global threat and the primary way to fight this threat is through the exchange of ideas, information and assistance. This exchange should take place beyond the borders of culture, religious, age, language and countries. We plan to ameliorate the lives of HIV positive patients to live with general population together and to reduce the stigma of AIDS. "Living together ".

In particular, we seek to improve the role of women in our activities. We encourage women to participate in our programs and to provide us with their ideas.

Thank you again for your support and we look forward to seeing you again.

Warm regards.

Background information on Drs. Alaei:
For your kind information we co-authored Iran's National and International Strategic Plans for Control of HIV/IDU/STI and were key players in putting forth Iran's Global Fund for AIDS proposal. We also established the first counseling and care center for HIV-positive patients and injecting drug users in Iran. These centers in Kermanshah and Tehran were recently documented as "Best Practice Centers" by the World Health Organization and are in the process of becoming collaborating-centers for the Eastern Mediterranean region. We have cooperation with National Research Institute of TB and Lung Diseases, which is one of the main centers for admission of HIV and TB cases, the collaborating center of WHO, and the regional office of IUATLD.
