Searchable Databases

ProPoor
This comprehensive site, listing several thousand NGOs from all over South Asia, is searchable by country, region, and issue. Headquartered in Singapore, Propoor is an organization "committed to the democratic dissemination of information and sustainable development initiatives to respond to the needs of underrepresented and marginalized sectors of society in South Asia" through the dissemination of information via technology. The website not only lists contact information and statements of purpose for South Asian NGOs, but also hosts homepages for NGOs, success stories and development news.

Database Search
This is the site of the Indian Development Information Network, which is the "The British Council's initiative to address problems faced by development managers in accessing development information on India." The first of its kind in India, indev holds and disseminates information that is crucial for decision-makers, researchers, academics and development managers and act as a gateway to development information on India. indev is a portal site with links to over 1000 leading development organizations in India. Bilateral agencies, government departments and leading NGOs, as indev partners, make the web site a 'one-stop shop' for development information on India. The database lists organizations, projects, documents and statistics. Organizations are searchable by sector, organization type (everything from small grassroots level to international NGO) and number of employees.

CAF India
This searchable database of 1500 voluntary organizations in India is run by the Charities Aid Foundation. Focusing on India, Russia, South Africa, Bulgaria, West Africa, this site features profiles of Indian NGO leaders and a "give as you earn" program. From the site: "The India NGO Database is a growing directory of Indian voluntary organizations who have come together with CAF India to ensure that donors and others can access reliable information on organizations working across the spectrum of charitable activity. The NGO database is based on responses to a questionnaire sent to agencies across India. We have based it on the information supplied to us and signed by the chief executive of each agency."

Princeton NGO Archive -- India
Princeton's NGO archive is a geographic guide to Indian NGOs, searchable by state, but not by sector.

Indian NGOs
This exhaustive searchable database features a host of health-related NGOs, including both an "Attention NRIs" section which allows NRIs to arrange for tours of NGOs, hospitals and slums in Mumbai, and an executive sabbatical site which encourages corporate mangers to donate their skills to Indian NGOs. The site also features advice on how to form an NGO, and how to fundraise, including links to the top 100 US grant-making institutions.

IdeaList.Org -- India
This site lists over 100 Indian NGOs dealing with health and education, and hundreds more dealing with environment, human right and women's issues. Idealist.org is a project of Action Without Borders and features 20,000 nonprofit and community organizations in 140 countries.

Sahayata
This is the website of Sahayata, a partnership between Concern India Foundation and IndiaWorld Communications Pvt. Ltd. Meaning "assistance" in Hindi, Sahayata attempts to link grassroots Indian NGOs and prospective donors through information and profiles. While it's not a searchable database, it is certainly a great place to begin.
