On June 12, 2005 Asia Society opened a groundbreaking exhibit using documentary photography and other artistic media to raise awareness of and stimulate action on China increasing AIDS epidemic. Images selected from the Positive Lives collection examine the reality of living with HIV/AIDS and how it affects individuals, families and communities, with a selection of images from the Asia Pacific region. This display included a new collection of work from China. In China, like in many countries, where fear of HIV/AIDS continues to fuel misinformation about the disease, the depth and intimacy of these images meet an urgent need for education and understanding about the disease.

Following the exhibition opening, Asia Society and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences convened a half-day symposium on June 13 to discuss the role of media and arts in the fight against AIDS.
