From Living Faith: Inside the Muslim World of Southeast Asia, by Steve Raymer |
A specialized form of calligraphy called "text illumination" is a traditional Islamic art form being rekindled through a project called Al-Quran Mushaf Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Moreover, calligraphy has been combined with decorative art, including colors and materials native to Malaysia, to create a 630-page manuscript of the Koran. Begun in 1997, the five-year-long project combined the skills of engineers, graphic designers, artists, gold-leaf specialists, and many student artists and assistants. |
