1989 Akihito becomes emperor of Japan
  Japan lost its sovereign on this date in 1989, when Emperor Hirohito died after a 62-year reign. The first emperor to disavow a claim to divinity, Hirohito dedicated himself to ceremonial duties following Japan's post-World War II transition to a constitutional democracy. His son, Crown Prince Akihito, succeeded him on the imperial throne on the same date.

  
1979 Vietnamese forces capture Phnom Penh from Khmer Rouge
  On this date, Vietnamese forces captured the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh and overthrew the Khmer Rouge government in retaliation for Khmer Rouge attacks on Vietnam. After gaining power, the Cambodian Government had rejected Hanoi's leadership, aligned itself with China, and engaged in raids along the Vietnamese border. Cambodia had argued that parts of the Mekong delta ruled by Vietnam rightfully belong to Cambodia. After the capture of Phnom Penh, Pol Pot and the remnants of his Khmer Rouge forces fled to the Thai-Cambodian border and began a long campaign to reclaim power. The Vietnamese broadcasts credited the revolutionary armed forces of the Cambodian National United Front for National Salvation with the 'liberation' of Phnom Penh and other regions, including Kampot, Takeo, Prey Veng, Kompong Cham and Kandal.

  
1978 Article vilifying Ayatollah Khomeini appears in Tehran daily Ittilaat
  On this date in Tehran, Iran, an article appeared in the daily newspaper Ittilaat that vilified the religious leader and symbol of resistance against the government of the Shah, Ayatollah Khomeini. This article, coming from high up in the Shah's government, set off a series of protests, and is considered to mark the beginning of the Iranian Revolution.

  
1954 U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower announces that the U.S. will maintain indefinitely its bases in Okinawa
  On this date, U.S. President Eisenhower declared during his state of the union address that the U.S. will maintain indefinitely its bases in Okinawa. The United States maintained complete control over the island until 1972 and continues to operate several bases there.

  
1942 World War II siege of Bataan begins
  During World War II, Bataan was the scene of heavy fighting between Allied and Japanese forces from this date until April 9, 1942, when Bataan fell to Japan. It was retaken by American forces on February 17, 1945.
